The end of
Apartheid in South Africa
In March 1988,
concerning the battle of Cuito Cuanavale (Southern Angola), the U.S. Defence
Intelligence agency conceded that the Cubans had “complete air superiority”. The
South Africans were losing the war in Angola, which led to the accords signed on
22 December 1988 at the United Nations in New York by the Foreign ministers of
Angola, Cuba and the Republic of South Africa. As a consequence South West
Africa (Namibia) and Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) would gain independence, Mandela was
freed and the apartheid in South Africa came to its end.
Our personal
(Jan & Pepa's) involvement with Angola started when we lived there, at the time
of decolonisation and independence in 1974.

reforms the following year. He was formally elected president of Egypt in June
1956. Nasser's popularity in the Arab world skyrocketed after his
nationalization of the Suez Canal and his political victory in the subsequent
Suez Crisis. Calls for pan-Arab unity under his leadership increased,
culminating with the formation of the United Arab Republic with Syria from 1958
to 1961 Following Egypt's defeat by Israel in the 1967 Six-Day War, Nasser
resigned, but he returned to office after popular demonstrations called for his
reinstatement . Nasser suffered a heart attack and died in 1970.
